Kingsway Park

Found close to Kirkby in Ashfield’s town centre, Kingsway Park offers excellent sports and recreational facilities for residents and sports teams. The Green Flag park covers 9 hectares with football pitches, floodlit synthetic pitches, a multi-use games area and tennis courts. There is also a skate park, parkour area, bowling green, bandstand, rose garden and for something to eat and drink head to Acre View Café.


The history
The park was laid out in 1930 on land sold to Kirkby in Ashfield District Council, by Miss Catherine Hodgkinson of Kirkby House, to be used as a public playing field for the community. Prior to this the site was grazing land for horses and locally known as 16 Acre Field. The street The Acre at the southern end of the park takes its name from this and the park is often referred to locally as ‘The Acre’.

The park’s heritage features are the stone archways at the entrances on Hodgkinson Road and Kingsway. Poplar trees were an important feature that lined the drive from the main entrance on the east side of the park, the western perimeter with the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) Railway line, and to the north as far as the Hodgkinson Road entrance. A mixed row of oak and ash and other native trees bordered the remainder of the northern perimeter and ornamental trees formed avenues within the park.

By car: Exit at Junction 27 of the M1 and continue on Mansfield Road/A608. Take Derby Road/A611 and B6021 to Hodgkinson Road in Kirkby in Ashfield.
