The history
The market town of Kirkby in Ashfield was once a collection of villages that was originally a Danish settlement. Kirkby translates in Danish to church town, and the area was mentioned in the Domesday Book for its two churches of St Wilfrid's Church and St Thomas' Church that both still exist today. The town expanded in the Victorian era due to its many collieries and had an extensive offering of railway lines that transported coal across the country.
