PROJECT STATUS: Ongoing project
REGENERATION STRAND: Green Ashfield

Under the Green Ashfield initiative, the aim is to deliver sustainable economic regeneration with the long-term objective of achieving zero carbon. Any project included in the Towns Fund programme will embed sustainable energy infrastructure, with new builds including sustainable energy sources and electric vehicle charging and cycle parking provided where appropriate.

The project also focuses on retrofitting existing council assets with sustainable heating and lighting solutions. A number of buildings have been identified that include shop units on Kirkby high street and park buildings, including Sutton Lawn and Kingsway Park pavilions, where solar or air source energy systems will be provided - along with the replacement of standard floodlighting with LEDs.

The project helps with the government’s commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and supports the council’s own carbon reduction ambitions.

In May 2023, Ashfield District Council was crowned Council of the Year for the East Midlands region at the annual Energy Efficiency Awards. The award recognised the work of insulating 104 bungalows across the district, the installation and replacement of external wall and roof insulation, as well as new ventilation and heating upgrades.

This work is part of a wider approach to investing in energy efficient upgrades to help transition the council’s housing portfolio of 6,632 homes to become carbon neutral.

The council has also appointed a Climate Change Officer working across the district to co-ordinate activity and drive further reductions. Read the council's Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan
